NEVER LET THE EMBARRASSMENT STOP YOU!
Embarrassment? It happens to all of us. One poignant episode happened in my young adult years. I enjoyed attention from a young man, much to the hated passion of my brothers. One day, I had friends over at my house, and this young man visited me. My brother came out and told me not to speak to him. I was being rebellious and wanted to show off to my friends, so I ignored the instruction.
My brother then walked up and out of the blue, started to beat me up in front of this young man and my friends. I will never forget the feeling. I realized I could freeze if I did not attempt to do something. So I got up, dusted myself off, took a big stone and charged after him. When I got close to him, he turn around with a smile and said, “As much embarrassment as you just faced just now, you still rose and came back to fight me.” I was so destabilized by my anger that I dropped the stone, and walked away.
Fast forward to many years after this incident, I travelled and met my brother for a chat. I started to tell him that I didn’t know what I was going back home to do. My business and life were at a low point, and I had done all I could. As we drove, he stopped by an ice cream place, handed me one and said, “I want to remind you of the incident where I embarrassed you and how it made you feel and how you were ready to fight back. Take this ice cream and let it remind you that no matter how ashamed you feel, you can rise and fight back!”
As I soaked in his words, it left goosebumps all over my body, and I determined that embarrassment was never going to keep me down again. As a business person, a person in love or a person living life, we will face devastating embarrassments that will make us sometimes drop to our lowest. The key, however, is not staying down but getting back up! What embarrassment are you facing? What do you think is so bad that the world hasn’t seen? As we jump into this new week, remember; embarrassment is a position and not a name. You’ll have many episodes of embarrassment, in life, love and work but your ability to rise, keep your head up, and charge forward is the name of the game!
