 BIAFRA: SANS, SOUTH-EAST LAWYERS SEEK TO JOIN NORTHERN ELDERS SUIT ON SECCESSION TUESDAY

Some southeast lawyers have decided to join a suit initiated by northern leaders over Biafra secession.

The northern leaders had filed a case that the country should allow the southeast break away from the country.

 The lawyers are now asking for order of the court to allow them join in the suit as representatives of the people of the southeastern region. In what will surprise the federal government, some legal practitioners from the South-East geo-political region of Nigeria have applied to a Federal High Court in Abuja to join them as defendants in a suit filed by a group of northern elders. The northern elders  are asking the court to allow for the secession of the Igbo from Nigeria based on the agitations of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafran and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. 

There are  converging opinions that the case of the northern elders seeking the exit of South-East from Nigeria had the capability to shape the life of the generation of Igbo people.  

The motion on notice for the joinder request was brought pursuant to order 9 rule 5 and order 26 rule 2 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rule 2019. The northern elders had in June this year filled the contentious suit asking the court to compel the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives to hasten the exit of the South-Eastern region out of Nigeria before concluding the on-going amendment to the country’s constitution.  

According to the group, this is one of the ways to end the violence associated with agitations for secession from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led by Nnamdi Kanu, The Sun reports. 

These northerners claim they are trying to avoid a recurrence of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war that claimed a lot of lives from both sides.
