HOW MY N108,000 DISAPPEARED FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT

Who should I blame?

I opened two current accounts with a second generation bank last year. After a couple of months, I directed the accountant to stop presenting cheques from the second account so we can use the money therein as capital for another project.

The following month, Covid-19 happened and the project was put on hold.

Six months ago, we decided to restart the project but suddenly found that our capital was short. I noticed that the account went down by over N108,000!

I asked for the statements for 8 months and found the reason for the shortage; our bank had been charging us over N5k a month, right from the time we halted transactions on the account!

I called the account officer and demanded an explanation. He said it was now a "special current account" set up that way. So who authorized this "special current account" and what benefits are we supposed to be enjoying from it?

Silence.

I wrote to the bank to stop the deductions and to return over N108,000 unauthorized monthly charges on it. This was six months ago. Rather than oblige my request, they halted the deductions and flicked the account to dormancy since we were not making any transactions on it.

My account officer has been dodging my phone calls ever since.

'm thinking I should share in the blame for not going through the Company's Monthly Account Statements with a fine tooth comb each month, trusting the accountant to handle that duty efficiently. And I'm also thinking how to manage the situation, including what to do with the accountant.

Isn't this daylight robbery?
